Raiza Palmera led all scorers with 17.

Abaca, here, defending Lim, managed only 5 points

while Allana put in 14.

Lady Archer Inna Corcuera scored the most for DLS, with 14.

In this photo, Lady Tamaraw Vangie Soriano is harassing her.

Camille Sambile contributed 10 points, making 5 out of her 9 attempts

for a 55% clip from the field.

Archer Trisha Piatos, failing to make double figures,

scored only 7 points.

In the last few minutes, the Lady Tamaraws had every reason to smile.

They now had a chance to exact veangance on the
defending champion Lady Falcons.

Tamaraws Knock Out the Fighting Falcons

When the going got tough, Tolomia got going.

Grizzled players like Garcia, Romeo, and Ramos were expected to carry the load for the Tams, but the 2011 Tams have younglood to complement the

Big Three.  Escoto used his height and Tolomia used his speed to make life extremely miserable for the Falcons.

Romeo has been playing more intelligently in FEU's recent matches

and been tougher to defend.

This is Ramos' last chance to win a Champioship.

This is his last playing year.

With the rookies contributing mightily,  RR didn't have to rake in big numbers for FEU to win.  This here Tams still have that end game kick.

Ateneo better be prepared.  

A lot of Tamaraw detractors were silenced over the past week after

 the their 2 straight wins over the Fierce, Fearless Falcons.

Canada and Alvarez had played their last UAAP game,

and were so close to getting into their first ever Championship Series

['twas Alvarez birthday too]  but fate denied Lester his birthday wish.

About an hour or so after the end of the game [when the Coliseum was practically empty except for some media people working in the press room, and some maintenance crews still packing up] Leo Austria and his boys slowly trickled out from the dugout.  They accommodated a few interviews.  I greeted some of those who I managed to catch -- Etrone and Colina.

  Luckily, I caught Lester just as he was leaving, shook his hand and said -

"Pare saan kayo tsitsibog ?"  He replied  "Wala, sa bahay lang ako."

Alex and Coy., come up empty handed again.

Everybody and everybody in the Press Room felt vary bad for the Falcons,

yours truly included.   Tough, VERY, VERY Tough.

Undermanned, with the absence of JR Cawaling

[w/ towel beside Jens Knuttel and James Fernandez] - - -

and Pippo Noundou [raising his arms], the Tamaraws

taught the supremely confident Falcons a thing or two

about playoff basketball.

Beach Volley - September 18 - Championships

September 18, Sunday

UE, Caloocan

Sand, Sweat, and Tears

UST and FEU bring home the Gold.

Time to take care of business  [Lady Tigresses]

With the Lady Falcons having been dethroned  - -

a Deciding Game 3 would usher in
 a new Champion.

Set 1 was very close, UST won [21-19]. 

At 15-all in the 2nd set, Maru Banaticla had a bad fall and was temporarily impaired.  As per UAAP regulations she was given a grace period of several minutes to decide wether to continue playing or let the Number 3, Pamela Lastimosa, sub her, at which point Maru could never be allowed

to play for the rest of the match. 

 

Maru, being a Team Player, opted to continue playing.  Despite the pain she had to tolerate came the risk that her performance might be a liabilty and open the door to an Ateneo comeback.

 

One might have thought it was the beginning of the end

for the Lady Tigresses - -

Maru had to be attended to, constantly.

The question was on everybody's mind - Could UST hold steadfast or would Ateneo win the second set and put even more pressure on Banaticla

on a deciding 3rd set ?

- True Grit -

UST somehow managed, relying on their years of experience, Caballejo and Banaticla prevailed upon Ateneo's younger tandem of Valdez and Tan -
the Lady Eagles were unable to exploit the situation.

.

 

The Lady Tigresses simply played better - - -

in the clutch. 

Tan and Valdez could not make the stops, when it mattered the most.

And in a matter of minutes, it was all over.

UST had won the Women's Beach Volley Crown
in two sets in Game 3.

Maru was still hurting, though.

A few minutes later and barely a few meters away, it was Bea

and Alyssa who were feeling a different kind of pain.

Like I always say

. . . Tough, very, very Tough.

And  - - -

As in my last couple of postings I'll cap this one with
 smiling faces  -- but this time -- I'm putting a little tongue.

After winning Game 2 to force a deciding Game 3 Bea and Alyssa
[who came from UST High], unwind.

to cheer for the Blue and White.
