How I wish my nephew and neice [both in high school]  were both rabid UAAP basketball fans like me so that every July to October every year we could have lots of bonding opportunities. 

Nace [Inigo] once told me basketball sucks - well, whatever - He's just not into it.  He is a promising soccer player AND will probably be a UAAP college rookie next School Year 2012-2013 at what UAAP university ?  That remains to be seen.  

I've pretty much documented [from the very first beginners class in football up to his present day FIFA matches] his evolution as a footballer and come his freshman year at college, watching him play in the UAAP will be real treat for me.  

UAAP soccer has it's own following, probably even its own mini-culture - the same with UAAP basketball or NCAA or even V-League volleyball. But watching in Araneta, especially when it's a Final Four or Championship basketball match with around 10,00 or more screaming fans  -- that simply doesn't happen in UAAP footaball.

Vanessa meanwhile, is in to baking [like her mom, my sister-in-law] and seems to have a passion for styling/make up, [U know, that sort of thing].

Well, whatever they're up to and whatever stuff they end up doing they will always have some wonderful photos.

Tamaraws - Warriors Encounter

July 21,Thursday

The FEU Tamaraws seem to be developing a habit of starting slow.  Their opening match vs La Salle on July 10 saw the Archers gain early momentun, only to succumb to the veteranship of the Morayta boys.  Last July 16, this tendency cost them dearly - the Falcons jumped the gun on them in the early goings, and even if the expected resurgence of Coach Flores' boys brought down a once formidable Adamson lead down to four - The Tamaraws simply lost their touch in the end game so it went to the Falcons.

Versus the Red Warriors, it was the same pattern once again - But, fortunately for FEU, their bench totally outclassed their UE counterparts by 18 markers

[44 to 26].  From a measly 6 pt. output in the first quarter, they poured in 24 points in the second, 25 in the third, and 21 in the fourth, while they held down UE to 9 points in the second, 7 points in the third, and 19 points in the fourth.

Exciminiano, Tolomia, Escoto put in 12. 9, and 8 points respectively while the usual higher scorers Cawaling, Romeo, Garcia, and Ramos followed with 8, 7, 7, and 6 points respectively.

UE veteran Paul Zamar, played only 15 minutes, missed all his 4 three-pointers and his one 2-point field goal attempt.  He made only 2 markers from the foul line.

Standing Ten Feet Tall

One sequence that I remember the most from the Ateneo W [86-62] over NU yesterday is that of a missed Blue Eagle field goal attempt which was punctuated by a gutsy offensive board by the smallest man on the court, Eman Monfort, over NU's tall Bobby Ray Parks Jr.   Yes, Monfort even added 4 steals [I remember 2 in particular:  one was from NU's other big, Mbe, while the other was from Terso, wherein Joseph ended up fouling Eman after the latter had swiped the ball from him]  and 6 assists [that's what good guards usually excel in, not so much on offensive boards].   Eman might as well have been ten feet tall yesterday afternoon.

Hands down [no pun intended],  this is now one of my favorite images from 

the UAAP Season 74's basketball wars.

Monfort's 3-pt. shooting was off but he more than made up for it 

with his defensive contribution.

The Loyola boys registered an assists high of 30.  They practically outdid their opponents in every department.  Among the 13 Blue Eagles who scored, only Chua had a 2-pt. field goal percentage below 50 [16%].  When the 3rd Quarter ended the Bulldogs had been shackled to a 32 point deficit [69-37]. Mbe had lost his bite due to fouls.  Parks had hardly gotten into his groove.  The Bulldogs confidence had been shattered. The most that the NU boys could hope for was a respectable, [possibly less than 20] [is that respectable?],  deficit by the end of the match. [They lost by 24].

Finally, after 2 matches, Sumalinog regained his touch.

Ompong scored  7  pts in the 2nd Quarter.

He hit his trey and all of his 4 free throws: he had 2 boards, 

an assist, a steal, and a block.

Pogi points.

Salva made 6 of his 11 field goal attempts and clawed 10 boards.

 

 One can never really prevent the Junior from hitting double figures

[Bobby Ray made 5 of his 7 field goal attempts and 10 of of his 13  foul shots]

but if you slow him down enough and intimidate the rest of his team

then, chances are, you will beat the Bulldogs.

Siblings [Generations Apart]

Mother & daughter, father & son, couples, team mates, twins, grandpa & grandchild, grandma & grandchildren, threesomes, a barkada of 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, a seminar group of a hundred, two hundred people, boss & employee, band member & manager, president & vice-president, doctor & patient -- and the list goes on -- name it, I've got it in my portrait archive  -- different subject combinations, pairings, whatever -- in a single photo.  Of course, it goes without saying that I've got hundreds, if not a few thousand solo portraits.

As I've mentioned in a recent entry [A Mighty Portrait], my "photographic roots" are in available light portraiture  --  I've been doing it for almost 2 decades.

And still am loving doing it now.

Fast forward to last July, 8, Friday, when I  brought my parents to have a snack with my aunt, [my mom's sister] my first cousin, and a pair of "pamangkins".

We got stuck in horrible C-5 northbound traffic somewhere near McKinley Hill, my car air-con wasn't working, and the rain was pouring.  Bad trip, [very uncomfortable] bad scheduling for a weekend salo-salo [8-10 p.m., C-5 northbound lane near Market-Market on a Friday evening with rainy weather -- what was I thinking ?].

We barely made it in time; My aunt and cousin and pamangkins were just about to leave when we arrived.  Anyway, that was all but forgotten since my parents [mom-88, dad-85], my aunt, my neice and neph all had a wonderful time. One need not treat one's old folks at fancy restos - a very simple, decent place like Jollibee C-5, J.Vargas [mostly car-riding patrons, not masses of people, go there, the air con is cold, and it never is that crowded] can suffice - It's the company that counts.

For me, simple no-occasion-get-togethers, are even BETTER photo ops than such as b'days and anniversaries [where one's attention tends to be spread], so I always make sure I make a LOT of nice, well crafted images of such.

Tigers Triumph

The absence of frontman, 3-point shooter Clark Bautista [out for the season due to academic deficiencies]  hasn't been much of a concern for UST, now that they have Rookie of the Year contender Kevin Ferrer.  This time, he again proved why he is is in the same mold as Ravena or Parks, as he led his team to their second straight W [70-63].

Kevin Ferrer takes a three.

He was UST's top scorer with 19.

Teng was UST's 2nd highest scorer with 13.

Paul Zamar, the only real veteran Warrior,

being smothered by the Tigers' D.

The inexperience of the Warriors was very evident in the first three quarters as they were outscored by the Tigers by 3 points in the 1st, 10  points in the 2nd,  and then 8 points in the 3rd quarter.  But the Warriors bench stepped up in the last quarter and almost upset the Tigers.  Jarencio's boys managed 10 points only as Codinera's put in 24 in the 4th.  It wasn't enough, though,to beat UST.

It will be your misfortune, if you leave this Tiger open.

Jeric had 13 points, and was the Tigers' 3rd leading scorer.

He's like a young boy in a big man's body -- Karim Abdul.

Had a chance to take some portraits of him at the dugout [post game] and

I could somehow feel how much he misses home, Cameroon, and sense much pride he has, despite his humble demeanor.  I can only wish him the best.

This rookie made double figures in the match.  Great effort Karim !

Bench scoring saw UE outclass UST [61-22].  In 2nd chance points UE did better too [12-10].  The Warriors fared better in the paint [13/31-->41.94% for 26 pts. as compared to UST's 10/30 -->33.33% for 20 pts.  On the other hand,   UST's outside shooting, starter points, and turnover points gave them the overall advantage over UE.  Four Tigers [Ferrer, Teng, Fortuna, Abdul] scored at least 10 pts. while only Zamar and Sumang scored over 10 for UE.

Bobby Ray & Coy Post First Win

NU's Thursday, July 14, overtime loss UST was probably haunting the Bulldogs as they went on to tackle the confident UP Maroons last Sunday.  In the dying seconds of the overtime period Bobby Ray took it upon himself to convert a J that could have won it for the Bulldogs.  He missed.  Come Sunday, the prize rookie made sure that NU would win with lots to spare. [75-66]

He had an 83.3% 2-pt. field goal clip.

Although UP had more rebounds [45-42], scored more in the paint [46-22], had 23 fastbreak points against NU's 6 --  It was in the free throw line were the Bulldogs left the Maroons eating dust [21 out of 25 foul shots made as compared to 6 out of 11 foul shots for UP].  NU outscored UP from the perimeter [32-14] too.
