Tigers Triumph

The absence of frontman, 3-point shooter Clark Bautista [out for the season due to academic deficiencies]  hasn't been much of a concern for UST, now that they have Rookie of the Year contender Kevin Ferrer.  This time, he again proved why he is is in the same mold as Ravena or Parks, as he led his team to their second straight W [70-63].

He was UST's top scorer with 19.

Paul Zamar, the only real veteran Warrior,

being smothered by the Tigers' D.

The inexperience of the Warriors was very evident in the first three quarters as they were outscored by the Tigers by 3 points in the 1st, 10  points in the 2nd,  and then 8 points in the 3rd quarter.  But the Warriors bench stepped up in the last quarter and almost upset the Tigers.  Jarencio's boys managed 10 points only as Codinera's put in 24 in the 4th.  It wasn't enough, though,to beat UST.

It will be your misfortune, if you leave this Tiger open.

Jeric had 13 points, and was the Tigers' 3rd leading scorer.

He's like a young boy in a big man's body -- Karim Abdul.

Had a chance to take some portraits of him at the dugout [post game] and

I could somehow feel how much he misses home, Cameroon, and sense much pride he has, despite his humble demeanor.  I can only wish him the best.

This rookie made double figures in the match.  Great effort Karim !

Bench scoring saw UE outclass UST [61-22].  In 2nd chance points UE did better too [12-10].  The Warriors fared better in the paint [13/31-->41.94% for 26 pts. as compared to UST's 10/30 -->33.33% for 20 pts.  On the other hand,   UST's outside shooting, starter points, and turnover points gave them the overall advantage over UE.  Four Tigers [Ferrer, Teng, Fortuna, Abdul] scored at least 10 pts. while only Zamar and Sumang scored over 10 for UE.

Bobby Ray & Coy Post First Win

NU's Thursday, July 14, overtime loss UST was probably haunting the Bulldogs as they went on to tackle the confident UP Maroons last Sunday.  In the dying seconds of the overtime period Bobby Ray took it upon himself to convert a J that could have won it for the Bulldogs.  He missed.  Come Sunday, the prize rookie made sure that NU would win with lots to spare. [75-66]

Although UP had more rebounds [45-42], scored more in the paint [46-22], had 23 fastbreak points against NU's 6 --  It was in the free throw line were the Bulldogs left the Maroons eating dust [21 out of 25 foul shots made as compared to 6 out of 11 foul shots for UP].  NU outscored UP from the perimeter [32-14] too.

A Mighty Portrait

The nickname of the little girl grimacing is "Mighty" [talk about unusual].  Heunefeld is her last name. The two boys are her brothers.  This photo was taken OVER 20 YEARS AGO at the garage of Mighty's grandmom,  a certain Mrs. Marilou Gordon [she was a well liked Barangay Captain of Magallanes Village, in Makati, for so, so many years -- she's retired now].  The Heunefeld family, though, resides in Spain, and Mighty's probably a beautiful Spanish  Senorita by now.

Yes, I do love Sports Photojournalism, and creating great sports images is fun for me [not that it's easy] but - Suffice it to say, my decades of doing available Light Portraiture have been and will be always be my "Photographic Roots", in a manner of speaking.  In those days, we had to work within the limits of the number of rolls of 35mm film we had [36 frames was the max per roll] and not knowing how our images would come out until after the film was processed [the fastest ever was an hour -- that is, if one could find a photo shop with that kind of service].   So if one were to photo document a weekend trek up a mountain, one would have to wait till  at least half a day or so  AFTER going back to the city [probably on a Monday] to find out if  one's photos turned out OK or not. [No room for error, absolutely no on-the-spot tweeks like with today's digital SLRs]  Ibang Klase talaga noon.  That kind of "training" -->

on-the-spot, NO Auto/Program modes -- I still love it,  still do it.   High Tech is cool but if one can mange Low Tech too, that's the coolest.

BTW, the photo above was taken with 35mm Fuji color negative film.

An [8 x10] print from the negative was scanned in an Acer flatbed scanner resulting in the JPEG shown above.

This photo came out in an issue of Lifestyle Asia, on an article about me and my portraits [written by Karen Galarpe] years ago. [There were 2 other available light portraits in that article which I might release in this blog son, that is, if I can find that damn issue]

Tigresses Take Down Lady Eagles

I managed to watch the First Half of the Ateneo Lady Eagles vs UST Lady Tigresses  match last Sunday at the Blue Eagle Gym  before rushing to the Araneta Coliseum to finish the Second Half of the NU-UP Men's game.   Both the Ateneo and UST Women's Team won their opening matches.  UST had beaten the Defending Champion Lady Falcons while Ateneo had triumphed over NU so I was looking forward to a close match.  Unfortunately,  for the Lady Eagles, they were outhustled and intimidated by the tough Tigress defense.

Her 2-pt. field goal percentage was a low 28% but she hit three out of five 3-pt. attempts.  She grabbed 7 boards and dished out 3 assists.

Rookie Danica Jose was renderred scoreless [6 missed attempts] by the swarming UST defense.

Samantha Ong, the heroine in the Lady Eagles'  Game 1 comeback triumph over NU last July 13, again topscored for Ateneo,  but it simply wasn't enough to beat UST.  Ong was the only Atenean with double figures [13 pts.].

Three Tigresses, Andaya, Laud, and Galicia [who also got 15 boards] combined for 42 points [all three Tigresses scored double figures].

Angry Birds [Part 2] The Phenom Strikes

July 16, Saturday

As they say in the vernacular "Mayroong K".  And Ateneo's Big "K" [Kiefer Ravena], more popularly called,The Phenom, jumpstarted Ateneo's offense with 3 consecutive baskets prompting Pumaren to press the panic button to call a time-out.  Black's boys, just kept the pressure on the LaSallians as they continued to dominate the Archers on the way to a 41-30 halftime lead.  The stunned young men from Taft could only manage 20.5% from the field while the Loyola boys  had a decent 47.7% clip in the first 20 minutes.  The phenomenal fact of the matter was that Ravena had accumulated 22 points in 15 minutes.  Ravena managed only 2 points in the 2nd Half, but the Championship savy of Salva, Monfort, and Long kept the Archers playing catch up basketball all game long.

In this attempt Atkins managed to push Long as he elevated, forcing Kirk to literally fall backwards and land on his butt, while complaining to the ref.

Kirk's shot went in none the less.

Of course, DLSU's work was cut out for them.

 Another BIG concern was Greg Slaughter.

LA Revilla, not surprisingly, topscored again for the Green and White.

He had 22 points, hitting 62.5% from the field [2-pt. FGoals] and hitting 1 out of 2  3-pt. FGoal attempts.  Both Revilla and Atkins fouled out in the

 4th Quarter when La Salle made a run, albeit,unsuccessful.

'Twas probably the most decisve trey of that afternoon.

Ateneo held on to win by 9.

If La Salle's Little Big Man is Revilla, Ateneo's Little Big Man

is hands down --> Eman Monfort.

Monfort scored only 1 field goal on a gutsy drive [above] but

calmly sank 8 out of 8 charities in the end game to neutralize the

 de La Salle 4th Qtr run.

Angry Birds [Part 1] Tamaraws for Lunch

July 16, Saturday

After the Adu-FEU match last Saturday, [around 1 p.m. or so] I was fortunate enough to have joined Leo Austria and his boys at the dugout.  Everybody was all smiles.  Austria couldn't have been more pleased. Mission accomplished.

Atop a monobloc table were 15 or so white styro packs, and each one had a banana on top.  Recovery meal, merienda, whatever, it didn't really matter what it was -- the Falcons were exhausted, obviously, but they were still pretty full -- they just had Tamaraws for lunch. [Final score 78-59]

Early minutes -- No stopping Nuyles.

Alex topscored with 22 pts. in 28 minutes playing time.

He made 7 of 16  two pt. field goal attempts.

Futile FEU defense.

Nuyles was a man obsessed and possessed.

 In the rebound department it was
TOTAL Domination by the Falcons.

When Adamson led by as much as 19 in the 2nd Half, everyone knew that it was just a matter of time before FEU would mount a comeback.  And as expected, they did - cutting the Falcons' lead down to 4.  But it was the Day of the Falcon last Saturday.  Leo's boys responded impressively as they countered with a run, that brought them 20 or so points ahead, that silenced the FEU Faithful with finality.

At one point, in the 4th,  "Air" Canada engineered 2 back-to-back aley-oops to Colina and/or Lozada [I forget] that wowed the Coliseum crowd.  [Jerick had a total of 5 assists]

And Coach Leo, when asked, post game, what Adamson still lacks - He replied
--- "A Championship".  Well done, Well said, Coach.
